"They lie in all the pools, pale faces, deep deep under the dark water. I saw them: grim faces and evil, and noble faces and sad. Many faces proud and fair, and weeds in their silver hair. But all foul, all rotting, all dead. A fell light is in them."

There And Back Again

Time: Jan 03, 2005 - 11:08 AM :: Posted by Grond :: Topic: Grond

Grond Hail Traveller!

First off.. if you have any questions or comments please send them to tolkien @ lostroad .com.

This is the remnants of an old site (www.JRRTolkien.net) that I used to run before I was forced to sell the domain name to the Tolkien Estate in 2003. In doing so a thriving community was closed down. I attempted to move the site to a different server, but some things got broken during the move and I cast the site into my archives back in 2003.

Earlier this year (2005) I decided to see what has beccome of the online Tolkien community since I've been gone. Much to my dismay the Tolkein Estate is out everywhere having sites, maps and other material removed for copyright infringement. There used to be a ton of excellent resources for Tolkien information online, but since Peter Jackson's movies came everything has been banished and removed. According to the Tolkien Estate, an artist cannot draw or paint a map of middle-earth without infringing on the Tolkien copyright.

I decided to take a little time and get this site back online and functional again. I've removed quite a few of the features that were on the old site, but all of the information and most of the functionality and features are still available.

Enjoy!

Regards,
Grond (Webmaster)

LOTR In Pakistan

MovieNews
Ladies and Gentlemen,

You won't beleive what is happening in pakistan. The LOTR trilogy has taken the country by storm. There are major sellouts of Tolkien books, and you can hardly find a LOTR DVD in the market. According to the circle i'm in, there are predictions that LOTR is here to stay.

Nicholas Sharaf
Pakistan

Note: Just another example of how inspiring and magical Tolkien's literary works are.

OED adds the word Hobbit

Time: Mar 27, 2003 - 10:48 AM :: Posted by whirledtraveler :: Topic: Literature

Books Hobbit is officially being put in the newest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. It is very rare that an author gets a word placed in this prestigious text. But the latest OED will include words from Tolkein, CS Lewis (jabberwocky) and JK Rowling (muggle). Fantasy fiction seems to now have the stamp of approval.

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is the mother of all dictionaries and the bible for all English majors. It not only discusses the history (etmology) of a word-listing -when/who/how the word was first used, but also provides quotes showing the word in use. The OED also illustrates how the word changed over the years, whether or not it is still in use, and how different countries use the word.

Currently the OED is undergoing a +35 million dollar update because it has not been updated since 1989. (The English language adds 3000 words plus a year). To be in the OED is very prestigious and words added undergo intense scrutiny and research.

The OED article can be found HERE.
