"I am in fact a Hobbit, in all but size...I like gardens, trees...I smoke a pipe, and like good plain food (unregrigerated), but detest French cooking..."

Character Bio:

He was born in 2890 to Bungo Baggins and Belladonna Took. He is the wealthy 'uncle' that took in an orphaned Frodo. He raised him telling him the stories of his exotic adventures. The other hobbits of the shire felt Bibbo was crazy since it's against hobbit nature to travel. When Frodo reached the age of manhood Bilbo decides to go on to new adventures among the Elves and leaves all his possessions including his home Bag End & a 'ring' he had won from a creature named Gollum ,during one of his previous adventures, to Frodo. Bilbo had never actually worn the ring nor knew about it's dark powers.

Actor Bio:

He was born Sept 12 1931 in Goodmayes, Ilford, UK. Ian Holm has earned respect and praise from theater, television and film critics alike. He won a BAFTA Award, Cannes Film Festival award and an Oscar nomination for his performance in Chariots of Fire. His memorable film performances include Another Woman, Hamlet, Frankenstein, Henry V, Naked Lunch, eXistenZ, and The Madness of King George. More recent films include Big Night, Joe Gould’s Secret, Night Falls on Manhattan, The Fifth Element, A Life Less Ordinary, Bless The Child, Beautiful Joe and the acclaimed lead in Atom Egoyan’s The Sweet Hereafter. He will next be seen in the Hughes Brothers’ horror-thriller From Hell with Johnny Depp. Appearing in numerous productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Holm has earned the Evening Standard Award (Best Actor) for "Henry V" and "The Homecoming," the latter for which he also won a Tony Award (Best Supporting Actor) for the Broadway production. He won rave reviews and an Evening Standard Award for Harold Pinters, "Moonlight." His recent performance as King Lear at the National Theater won him an Evening Standard Award, and Olivier Award, and the Critics Circle Award. He was nominated for an Emmy Award (Best Actor) for the televised version. Holm has also appeared in dozens of prestigious films for television. In 1998 he was awarded his Knighthood.

Actor Commentary:

"I think there's no question that good and evil collide and combine in his character. He's like all of us in that sense. His obsession makes him turn into a sort of Gollum at one point, which was again heightened in ADR [additional dialogue replacement, or looping]. Then he retracts and says, "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry!"
