Character Bio:

Near the time of the War of the Ring, Eowyn met Aragorn, and instantly fell in love with him. When she learned that he planned to ride the Paths of the Dead, she despaired, and soon feared him dead. In the disguise of a man named Dernhelm, she left Rohan, and rode to Gondor with the king's forces, sneaking Merry along at her side. Eowyn won great renown, with the aid of Merry, by slaying the Witch-King and his fell steed. During the slaying of the Witch-King, Eowyn sustained a near deadly injury, and was also hurt by the black breath. During her stay in the Houses of the Healing in Gondor, she met Faramir, and while recovering, fell in love with him. After the War of the Ring, Eowyn and Faramir were married, and she became the White Lady of Ithilien.

Actor Bio:

Miranda Otto was born in Brisbane, Australia in 1967. She is the daughter of famed Australian actor, Barry Otto. She graduated from the prestigious NIDA Theatrical School in 1990 and has been nominated four-times for the Australian Film Institute's award for best-actress. Miranda made her film debut in Emma's War in 1986 and gained significant recognition in 1991's The Girl Who Came Late. She has been in many critically acclaimed but little-seen films. Otto finally got Hollywood's attention with small roles in major motion pictures such as The Thin Red Line (1998) and Robert Zemeckis' What Lies Beneath (2000).After Cameron Diaz decided to star in Being John Malkovich, Miranda lost the role in a film she really wanted to do. The director, however, remembered her and cast her in Human Nature, due to hit US theaters in April 2002. Otto landed the role of Eowyn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and plays Tolkien's only really detailed female character in the books. She spent six-months on set in New Zealand during which she had to learn sword fighting and horseback riding. Miranda is currently living in Australia and is happily single. The Lord of the Rings movies are expected to gain her worldwide attention.

Actor Commentary:

"She's not some wimpy kind of Sleeping Beauty character, but someone with a bit of guts. Slightly cold, white, emotionally distant, a lady."

"It is potentially a wonderful character for young women to see," Otto says, "because this is a woman who is in despair about what has happened to her country, Rohan, and when Aragorn [Viggo Mortensen] arrives, she sees him as the savior. But he doesn't fall in love with her, so she dresses up as a man and goes to war. I thought, 'This is a story where a woman becomes her own knight in shining armor to save herself and other people. That's a good role model, because so many of the mythic stories we're given as children are about women being saved by men."
