In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort. It had a perfectly round door like a porthole, painted green, with a shiny yellow brass knob in the exact middle. The door opened on to a tube-shaped hall like a tunnel: a very comfortable tunnel without smoke, with panelled walls, and floors tiled and carpeted, provided with polished chairs.

Character Bio:

He was born in 2879 to Golum, a nobel of Erebor. Gimli is of the Dwarven race. The drwarves of Middle Earth are the most ancient and long lived people of the land. They are a tough, stought people who are shorter than humans but taller than Hobbits. They inhabit the hidden places of the world in huge underground cave systems and tunnel complexes. Dwarves are famed for their great prowess in battle and for their legendary skills in mining and working with both metal and stone. They have crafted extraordinary artifacts in their smiths including fine axes, swords and jewelry. They are also known for their monumental architecture far beneath the earth. Gimli traveled to Rivendalle with his father and other Drwaven nobles when the creation of the fellowship was being decided. It is he who is chosen to represent the Dwarven race among the 'Fellowship', though he like most Dwarves has a deep seeded mistrust of Elves and their sorcerous ways. Inspite of his bad-tempered and cantankerous ways Gimli soon becomes a close friend to Legolas.

Actor Bio:

Was born May 5, 1944 in Wiltshire, England, UK. He has become an acclaimed actor who is probably best know to film audiences for his roles in the blockbuster hits "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." He has also had leading roles in "Victor, Victoria," "The Living Daylights," and "King Solomon's Mine." Rhys-Davies, who was raised in England, Africa and Wales, credits his early exposure to classic literature for his decision to pursue acting and writing. He later refined his craft at London's renowned Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. His television credits include James Clavell's "Shogun" and "Noble House," "Great Expectations," "War and Remembrance" and "Archaeology." An avid collector of vintage automobiles, Rhys-Davies has a host of theater roles to his credit, including "the Misanthrope," "Hedda Gabler" and most of Shakespeare's works. He divides his time between Los Angeles and the Isle of Man.

Actor Commentary:

"He's wonderfully politically incorrect. He says exactly what he thinks. He is prejudiced. He is a little bit scared of the supernatural. He is suspicious, occasionaly mean but unimaginably brave. He will turn and face the foe always, as long as he has his axe in his hand. There is a magnificence to that. And the most wonderful thing about him, of course, is that he doesn't realize he is small."
