"Gimli took some and rubbed it in his palms and sniffed it. ‘It feels good, and it smells good,’ he said. ‘It is good!’ said Merry. ‘My dear Gimli, it is Longbottom Leaf! There were the Hornblower brandmarks on the barrels, as plain as plain."

Character Bio:
| He was born in 2980 to Hamfast Gamgee and Bell
Goodchild of the Hobbit race. Samwise (Sam) is a gardener like his
father. Being of a lower social class and less educated than Frodo,
he is his manservant but also his friend. Sam's job was to tend Bilbo's
gardens at Bag end but like Frodo, Sam loves traveling and exploring
having heard many of Bilbo's tales of exotic adventures. He has fallen
in love with Rosie Cotton, one of the prettiest hobbits in the Shire,
but Sam is too shy to approach her. In spite of his love of traveling
Sam has never actually been much further than the Shire but that is
about to change. He stands by Frodo as a member of the 'Fellowship'
on their journey to destroy the 'One Ring'. |
Actor Bio:
| Sean Patrick Astin
was born February 25, 1971 in Santa Monica, California to John Astin
(famous for playing Gomez on "The Addams Family" among other
things) and Patty Duke, both actors. He was their first child, but
when Sean was two his brother Mackenzie was born (he would also become
an actor). They also have three older half brothers, David, Allen
and Tom, who belong to their father. Sean was literally brought up
on acting due to his famous parents. Although you may think that his
first acting job was in Goonies, The (1985), it wasn't. In 1981, at
age 9, Sean starred with his mother in the after school special Please
Don't Hit Me Mom. 'The Goonies' followed and since then he has had
a steady stream of good roles. Sean attended Crossroads High School
for the Arts. He has also studied with the famous Stella Adler. Of
course, we all know that starring in a teen comedy is almost inevitable
for a young actor. Sean was no exception. In 1987 he co-starred with
another teen heartthrob, 'Kirk Cameron' in 'Like Father, Like Son'.
A few very good movies followed, including 'Toy Soldiers' and 'Where
the Day Takes You'. More recently Sean has starred in Rudy and the
Showtime movie 'Harrison Bergeron'. But his career in film has expanded
much further than just acting. He directed and co-produced the short
film 'Kangaroo Court' which was nominated in the Best Short Film category
at the 67th Annual Academy Awards in 1995. Interestingly enough, Sean's
father was nominated for the same award in 1969. Sean is now married
to Christine Astin, who co-produced 'Kangaroo Court' with him. The
couple live in Los Angeles. Even though he's a successful director,
he's not about to give up acting. |
Actor Commentary:
"He`s just got
such a warm, honest, pure good-hearted essence. And that`s his position
in the films and in the book. Its to be a kind of barometer
against which all of the adventure and evil is measured. Sam has an
unfaltering moral compass. He always knows who he is. As all the different
characters, with all their different complexities, change and evolve
and grow or fail, Sam just is... good. He has a level of experience
at the end of the trilogy that he didn`t have at the beginning that
informs his goodness. It makes his goodness that much more admirable.
It`s easy to be naive and innocent and good but it`s another thing
to have been embattled and, despite all of the trials and tribulations
of an epic adventure, to remain good of heart."
" I was told I had to gain a lot of weight because Hobbits are
very portly. Peter is forever suggesting I have more food. 'A little
more food for Mr. Astin.' |
